Minervacrafts Meet Up - June 2014

 British Sewing Awards 2013
Hello, hello, hellooooo. Is anyone  there?

Yes I know, it has been so long, and even when I do blog it is nothing to do with anything I have sewn *bends her head down in shame*.  I will blog some creations I promise, am going to learn how to make tops/blouses and not bore you with any more simple skirts. I have a couple more skirts to show you, then it's something a little more interesting. Er stop yawning y'all.

Am not an avid blogger but I have never left it this long but when life gets in the way, it gets in the way. I noticed all my images have disappeared from a couple of my previous posts and my profile pic. What's gone on there? It annoys me that kind of shiz. Anyway on to the topic of this post, Minervacrafts meetup (hereon Minerva).

I follow a lot of blogs and besides seeing images of the bloggers fab creations they also wax lyrical about sewing meet-ups they have been on or about to go on. I read about this dozens of times, which got me thinking, hey T why don't you get in on the action. This year I did. Not one but two, NYlon which was held in London, May this year (blog about that another time) and Minerva this month, June the 14th to be precise.

I was intending to go to Minerva by car with a sewing group gal but work intervened and they had to cry off much to my disappointment but hey that's how the cookie crumbles.

Photo: Courtesy of Minervacrafts

Minerva is a craft store based in Darwen just outside Darwen train station. Love it  when a place is that close to a train station when you don't drive. Minerva won four sewing awards in 2013 and decided to celebrate the fact. The beauty of these awards is that they were voted by the likes of you and me, not the establishment. Okay I have no idea who the establishment might be but I have been dying to say "the establishment"  sounds gangster.

So here I was left to my own devices, bouncing back and forth as to whether I was going to go as I wasn't feeling well and the the fare was about £14 aka fabric money. To cut a long story short I decided to attend. Up I was at the crack of dawn, showered and dressed, eyes struggling to adjust to the daylight. I jumped the train, arrived too early for the event, went for a wander, returned a few moments before the doors opened.

Friendly faces, bucks fizz and a bag containing the agenda and other bits and bobs was there to greet me, yes, ladies and gentlemen  I was glad I decided to go.  As the old adage goes, you regret more the things you didn't do than the things you did, or something along those lines, you get the gist.  Or to sound gangster . . .  You get me ?

Golden Girl Vicki - Sales Director

It was nice to meet the sales director and co-ordinator of the event Vicki in the flesh and in the dress I had seen sneak previews of on instagram. Glancing around the store, to say I was like a child in a candy store is to put it mildly. Okay we UK'ers say sweet shop but the Americans 'candy store' sounds so cute besides my grandad was American so I will use that as my excuse. A quick glance around this fabric heaven was enough for me to wish I had more money, much more money. This was further cemented after fondling touching the fabric Ooo eee. Where's that genie when you need him?

I couldn't resist adding a caption.

Me: Hey Vicki, doubt I will be buying any fabric today.
Vicki: Yeah right! You crack me up, you should be a comedian.

Various workshops, quizzes, competitions were the order of the day.  if you were lucky to find one of the gold tickets hidden amongst all that fabric you won a prize, simples. Do people still say 'simples' ? Not heard it for a while but I kind of like it, even though I don't use it. Great talks by Elisalex and Victoria -  By Hand London and Karen who blogs over at Did You Make That. Have you spotted Karen above in the fabulous dress, I kept eyeing up, as I love a funky print, yes sir.

With regard to BHL I desperately want their Elisalex pattern, I mean WANT! I only noticed it in Minervacrafts after I had spent my money, damn! Same when I was in London for the NYlon meet-up, I thought yes I will pick this up but I don't think we went near a stockist. The opportunity only appears to arise when am skint.  I suppose it might be a good idea to learn how to make tops before I start crying over fully blown dress patterns. I even have the fabric for this pattern, so I know I will have it one day, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but one day. A little homage to Casablanca.

Vicki and two of the cool By Hand London gals Victoria & Elisalex

Back to Minerva there are a plethora of fabulous photo's here on the Minerva website, gorgeous photo's of the bloggers et al in their evening clothes, referred to as the Big Reveal.

Anyway if you are not far away from Darwen check them out one day or order fabric from their award winning website, which I will be doing in the future as they have some fabulous jersey's which is hard to get hold of in my neck of the woods. Am sure I have just seen a notice that said they were having a 20% promotion on selected fabrics, mosey on over. By the way it's free UK delivery on orders £20 and over, again am going to use that word . . . simples.

Before I go I will leave you with this pearl of wisdom . . . Cool Girls Sew.

Excuse any typo's am dog tired

Burda Style Magazine Pattern Review - Sept 2013

I don't always like the patterns in the Burda Magazines so I don't tend to buy it every month. I have bought it this month but I won't say I was jumping up and down but I do like more than two patterns so the magazine qualified for a purchase.

Anyway here are a few I like.

Romantic Dress

Love seeing these type of dresses on those that can carry it off, they always look so dreamy and romantic. Not one for me though, I would look like a buxom milk maid.

Skirt

I will definitely be trying this skirt because for some strange reason I love making skirts. According to the magazine the slit results from two overlapping front pieces which are caught in the side seams.

Boat Neck Dress

I really like this. Not sure whether this will suit my petite chubby frame, perhaps a smaller star. Anyway I want to make it as I just love the boat neck. If I hate it on me after doing a muslin, I will sack it, but the dress is so damn cool. No doubt some will say it looks a little 80's but hey that's my era.

Peplum Blouse

This is one cute blouse. Fly front closing and a double gathered peplum to accentuate the waist. I'd call mine more of a girth than a waist but hey am going to be all over this one, since I have a wide belt that will keep the girth in check.

Embroidered Waist Coat

Liking this little waist coat too, described as an exotic short waistcoat made of richly embroidered silk and embellished with braids invisibly closed with snap fasteners. Sounds scrumptious doesn't it hehe. I will also attempt the tunic underneath.

Tunic

Speaking of tunics here it is again in a patterned fabric accented with satin piping. This pattern is in the plus size of the magazine.

Silk Cape

Last but not least is this cape. It wouldn't suit my style but I think it is really nice. Made of silk duchesse and worn like a stole across the shoulders. This would look great on the right person.

Anyway they are my picks, so I have my money's worth since the magazine is only £4.75. There a few other patterns I like and will attempt but they will rank lower than the above.

Sidenote: I give up trying to make my images uniform in relation to the text some have wider spaces than the others and when I delete the spaces the image disappears or ends up somewhere else hehe.

Next Project - Burda 04/2013 119

Am back! I have fully recovered from my first top. Ok there wasn't much to recover from, and one should get a grip, but I do like to be melodramatic.

Right peeps am onto top number two, Burda 04/2013 119

Yeah, how cute is this top? Obviously I will be getting help from my former tutor who has been hosting the odd sewing sessions in her studio. I will of course will be doing a muslin/toile, since am not as rock and roll as some of you out there. A muslin will always be my first port of call, if I want to keep my mental health in check.

I have some blue and white gingham in my stash, am not entirely sure am a gingham person but am stash busting, saving up for a trip to Barcelona and cost cutting so it will have to be done. Here's hoping this doesn't end up as a peplum, the fate of my last top hehe.

Other Business

I will be blogging about my trip to Barcelona in a separate blog,  Sassy's Travels if anyone is interested.

Megan Nielsen thought it would be fun to make her brother a tee by utilising her cr* fabric scraps, inspired by http://www.shiteshirts.com/   Hilarious!

Here is my fave pic of her brother doing a Usain Bolt pose. This was definitely one for my Sassy Sewing Bee's page, been dying to post a man on there, getting bored with just women.

Courtesy of http://blog.megannielsen.com/

More on Megan's blog.

Also finished the peg bag I made for a work mate at her request. Made a few boo, boos but nothing a few pegs can't live with.

On The Cutting Table - Burda 05.12 110 B

This top ...

Nice to finally to be able to say "on the cutting table" as opposed to thinking I should say "on the effin pain in the a*se coffee table" Plus I feel all grown up and experienced saying "cutting table".

Doubt my "interpretation" will look anything like the above image, being my first top, but we all love a tryer. Can't believe am attempting Burda's notoriously scary magazine instructions to construct my first top. That being said it looks like I should be okay if am armed with some additional resources. Am facing doing an FBA and sewing a top on the bias with trepidation but it is high time that I put this at the back of my mind and get started.

On the plus side I will be attending a sewing session tomorrow which will be hosted by my former tutor so I will be looking forward to that. Am sure she will help if I get stuck. I am just so damn excited that am going to be with like minded people, so who knows peeps I may be knocking up garments left right and centre as I have signed up to about five three hour sessions.

I will be doing muslins/toiles for all as am never happy with the fit of my skirts let alone tops.

Before I disappear, I have been posting the odd, cute beautiful or sassy creation I have come across on my Sassy Sewing Bees facebook page. Head over there if you are like me and love looking at other peoples creations but haven't got time to read all the blurb. Instant eye candy. Oh and "like" the page while you are there.

Cheeky aren't I?

Importing Google Reader Blogs

Following on from my last post regarding the retirement of google reader, if you do register with Bloglovin, in settings there is a tab to import your blogs from google reader. This will save you a lot of time I suspect. However I have heard they wasn't prepared for all the action and are having a few teething problems.

Off the subject to give you an update. I have moved the table I bought for cutting out into my living room for now, it's only me that will see it so no biggie. Only a temporary measure but it is too heavy to log up another flight of stairs to the spare room. Shall postpone that until I solicit some help.

What a difference it has made, I have amended my pattern and cut out today. So unlike me. Normally takes me a fortnight to do it as I get put off doing it, since it is either on the floor or my coffee table.

Only problem is, this is the first time I had unpacked my table only to find it is not adjustable as per description so I have sent an email to the seller to explain he has sent the wrong one. I have sat down to do most of my pattern cutting but I want an adjustable table. I have a bad back and although this table is better than the alternatives it is still not making my sewing experience enjoyable, since I have to bend quite a bit if am standing.

So this has taken the shine off my sewing preparation but am going to plod on as it has been so long.

Goodbye Google Reader

Apparently Google reader is calling it a day on July 1st.  I have always been a Bloglovin gal so it doesn't effect me. If this affects you and you still  fancy following me, check out Bloglovin as a means of following. There is also another blog reader called Feedly which has had some good reviews and appears to be recommended as one of the best alternatives to Google Reader that work with buffer - no idea what that is but click on the Feedly link above for more info.

Here is another article on someone else idea of the six best blog readers. It gives you an overview of each one.

Moving on to another topic, you will be surprised to hear I have my fabric and pattern laid out to whup up the skirt I mentioned in Wednesday's post. I need some notions but I can get cracking on the pattern alterations and fabric cutting. Feeling a little excited as I have a few days off work. So no excuses.

The skirt is nothing special just a simple flare skirt but it will be great to actually sew something.

Speak to you soon.

Happy New Year . . .

Happy new year you gorgeous sewing people. What have I been doing since I last posted . . . working of course.  I just love saying that after a nasty spell of unemployment.

This is my last month of the temporary post but I have to admit these four months have made a wealth of difference to me. Any overtime, I have taken advantage of as a matter of course, treating myself to some sewing related goodies in the bargain, cheering me up no end. In fact I made it my business to dwindle my metre long sewing wishlist, and I have to say it has been so satisfying.

The icing on the cake has been finding an adjustable height trestle table that would serve as a cutting table, as I desperately needed one - my small coffee table was simply not cutting it, excuse the pun.

Bad back + Small Coffee Table = No Sewing Mojo

I have also enrolled on another sewing course, level 3, I have already done level one and two.  That being said, it was was so long ago since I done them, am beginning to wonder, whether I can remember how to thread Lady Boo Boo.

The course cost only about £50 so I had to snap it up. Plus it will be nice mixing with other sewers as my social life has been zilch.

I will learn about fitting, setting in sleeves, how to use an overlocker/serger and a few other bits. It is just a once a week, two hour evening class for 10 weeks, but I am so excited. At the very least it should give my sluggish sewing mojo a big kick up the a**e derriere.

Well that's all for now but am getting there folks and one day, I say one day, you will actually see something I have actually sewn instead of all this blurb.

Wishing you the best for 2013

Greetings . . .

How are y'all? I thought it was time I updated this blog before it started growing grey hairs like its author. I have recently started a temporary job, nothing exciting but it pays my bills, puts food on the table and buys those other little things one takes for granted when working. Moreover I have cleared one of my overdrafts which gave me a headache each month with charges and fees. And am talking tense nervous headaches!

Pretty stressful being unemployed this time around, deciding each month, how I was going to keep the wolves at bay, but here I am feeling much more at ease and itching to get sewing again. I think Lady Boo Boo (my sewing machine) thinks I am MIA.

I won't be able to attend any sewing classes but I will light a match under that sewing mojo if it's the last thing I do, and endeavour to self teach, making use of all those links I have saved.  The past one and a half years have seemed like a bad recurring dream and it has certainly put things into perspective.

In the meantime I will keep being inspired by you all.

All About Knitting

This post is as the title states - all about knitting, well 95% of it is,  so click out if you are looking for a sewing post. Oh and I know what you're thinking, hey Sassy your posts are hardly ever about sewing, so no biggie. True,  just thought I would warn you.

Now the pleasantries are out the way lets get to my first knitting post.

I had been thinking of learning to knit for sometime but hadn't done anything about it, until I received a generic library email, asking whether I was interested in learning to knit, if so call this number.  I did and started to attend a weekly afternoon group.

After a little practice I started to work on a scarf, making mistakes, unravelling, dropping stitches, making mistakes, unravelling. I would leave it for weeks, then do a few rows then leave it for a few weeks more. I was beginning to wonder whether the scarf would end up being competed prior to me burying it alive.

Anyway am pleased to say I completed the scarf, just in time for the miserable weather, we are having in my neck of the woods.

I used a cornflower blue, double knitting yarn, cotton acrylic mix. Picked up eight 50g balls from a charity shop for £8, snapped it up without thinking, as it was so soft. Still have about 3 or 4 balls left. This yarn would have cost more than double in the shops, last time I saw it in a craft shop, the price was £2.75 a ball. Am no fashionista but you can't deny am a bargainista.

Enough about a boring old scarf, let me share with you, three fabulous knitted/crocheted projects.

1. Crocheted Cardigan

courtesy of http://handmadeinstyle.blogspot.co.uk/

How awesome is this crocheted cardigan. Sachi sews some lovely garments and features them on the Burda website. I didn't even know she crocheted or had a blog until recently, when this cardigan floated up the Burda stream. This is also her first crocheted garment. Impressive!

2. Knitted Dress

Green Knitted Dress #3
courtesy of http://jorth.blogspot.co.uk/

Jaw dropping eh? This was referred to on another bloggers page, and I clicked into the link and thought WOW.

I wouldn't have the patience or cash to make anything as elaborate like this, the scarf alone gave me more grey hairs than I would like but I just enjoy seeing other peoples creations.

3. Food Glorious Food

Hungry? Well here is some food goodies knitted by one of the talented ladies in my knitting group. I think she said she has been knitting since 1966. She just loves it and gets involved in all kinds of projects. I will tell you about one of them in my next knitting posts.

So that winds up my knitting post.

Until Next Time

Blog Name Assistance

I want to change my blog name, got bored with Sassy T Sews. Am easily bored. Finding it difficult to think of one that hasn't already been done by either another blog or website. At the moment I have A Dressmaking Journey,  I don't mind it but I want something with a little more bite, wondering whether it sounds a bit boring. Just thought of  Seam A Stress,  a play on the word seamstress and since my creations, in particular the seams involve some sort of stress lol.

I know many don't like the word seamstress for a sewer but I do.

Should I just keep A Dressmaking Journey? It does sound a little sophisticated. Any suggestions?

During my sewing life I may think of another but in the meantime . . .

ETA: I might ditch Seam A Stress, there are quite a lot of similar blog names, just googled. Arggghhh.

Everything I like is already used a dozen times one way or another. I need to get my creative head on. Think I may just use  a name that is nothing to do with sewing, might be easier.

How about Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, a song title from one of my favourite singers Ella Fitgerald, although a bit long winded.  In fact I think I will check out the song titles from my favourite back in the day jazz singers and come back with a list.

For example Blue Gardenia by Dinah Washington or Just For The Thriil by Ray Charles, love that tune. Ooo it's coming together, feel more excited now. I still welcome any suggestions though from my sassy peeps.

If you have prefer one of all of the above, please let me know to help in my decision making. Need my hand holded sometimes lol. I do have a favourite thus far but await your feedback. In the meantime I willl go and check out some of my favourite song titles.

Don't be shy.

ETA: I have gone with Thread Noir, suggested by someone on a forum. I love Film Noir and tend to sew in the evening, so it seems ideal. It has that mysterious sophisticated, dark appeal about it. Thanks ladies.

More Awards . . .

Thought it was about time I paid my dues in respect of the awards I have recently received. Namely the Liebster and the Sunshine. I say recently but it was a couple of months ago but am such a lazy, bee-atch I have only just got round to posting about them. So first of all a big thank you to Bundana for nominating me for both the Liebster and Sunshine blogger Awards.

Am not really worthy since I hardly sew, but I will one day honest. Just a little awkward at the moment as I only have a coffee table lol. Hoping to join a class/workshop or sewing group in the future so hopefully I will be whipping them up, assuming I have a job by then.

The Award Rules

 Liebster

1  Thank your Liebster Blog Award presenter on your blog.
2  Link back to the blogger who presented the award to you.
3  Copy/paste the blog award on your blog.
4  Present the Liebster Blog Award to 5 blogs (with 200 followers or less).
5  Let them know they have been chosen by leaving a comment.

Sunshine

 1. Thank the person(s) who gave you the award.
 2.  Answer 10 questions.
 3.  Pass the award on to 10-12ish sunshine-worthy bloggers.
The 10 Q's

1. Favourite animal
Fish. I just love them and would one day want an unusual aquarium. The fish with the huge frog eyes make me giggle and I adore the ones with the big lips. One day am going to own one of each, calling the latter Jagger, as in Mick and the former Peter Lorre, scary looking actor form the black and white film era.lol.

2. Favourite number: I don't have one.

3. Favourite non-alcoholic drink: Fresh Orange

4. Facebook or Twitter: Not that enthused about either, had my day with them a few years back. If I have to choose, it would be Facebook. but Pinterest is the daddy now.

5. My passion: Sewing, although I do very little of it.  I wish I was more experienced, and also had a large table and an overlocker.  One day hey.

6. Getting or giving presents: Ooo a toughie. Probably giving.

7. Favourite Pattern: I am just a beginner and not had much experience with patterns so don't have a favourite pattern at the moment. At the moment I love the flare skirt pattern in the book Flirt Skirts.

8. Favourite day of the week: I don't have a favourite day but if I was working, it would have to be Friday, for the obvious reasons.

9. Favourite flower: Tulips.

10. Favourite celebrity role model: I don't have any celebrity role models.

 The Nominees

Am going to modify the requirements somewhat, and pass over both the awards to  five bloggers, I have recently started to follow because of their sense of style and cool blogs.

Nifty Thrifty

Today I decided I would go for a long walk and check out a few charity shops in other localities. I popped on my warm coat, walking shoes and gave it legs down the busy roads.  I checked in and out of charity shops, nosed at buttons, leafed through knitting patterns and eyed up vintage knitting needles.

Fortunately, I had previously got a good deal on ten pairs of knitting needles from an eBay seller, about £3.50 including P&P, so I wasn't in the market for them this time around. No doubt there will be quite a few I don't have but that will be addressed if and when a pattern dictates.

After about two hours, my legs were screaming for a rest so I spotted a library, marched over and logged on to one of their computers. Yeah, I know I was just using the library for a sit down. After a short break I was up again and checking out more charity shops, not really seeing anything of note, but enjoying the experience nevertheless.

I was getting to the tail end of charity shops, and after  asking one assistant whether they sold buttons, she directed me to a thrift shop, just a bit further up the road, that sold buttons and other things you can't get elsewhere.  Well, I practically sprinted there.

What a shop! As I walked in, to my right on a cabinet, my eagle eyes spotted two boxes, one labelled knitting patterns and the other, sewing patterns - 20p each! I was in them boxes quicker than a child's hand in an open cookie jar.

I came away with four patterns and some buttons. Even though they are not patterns I would go out my way to order in ordinary circumstances, but at 20p a piece I would have been crazy to have left them at the shop.

Well here they are;

I will probably try the view with the sleeves. I do like the other views but my arms or the Bronte sisters won't thank me for it. I will need a good bra with the neck being high up, my current bra's have had a hard life, I put them on they give me the bleurgh, I can't be a*sed attitude.

Looks a little bleurgh, but am sure I can do something with it. Those sleeves look a tad too long for my tastes, easily rectified and I see a funky fabric for this one, to give it some Oomph.

I will probably take away a little of the volume as I don't have much regard for the top as it looks in the image, but images can be deceiving. It's got my creative juices flowing if nothing else.I have a sneaky feeling the Bronte's will like this one.

ETA: Just realised one of the other views are fitted with contrasting arms and band.

I like the first tiered skirt. I can see a little colour blocking going on in my summer version. I like that it has a regular waistband rather than elasticated, which is more flattering to someone with a girth like mine.

Never even thought of creating under garments, I wouldn't go so far as trying to make bra's for the Bronte's since I would need a sewing room of corrugated iron for that task but teddy's and briefs, yeah I can see myself given them a go when my experience is up a few notches.

I hadn't realised until I was on my way home, and feeling totally exhausted that I had been walking for four hours plus, and that is even with the time in the library and shops taken into account. I had to jump the bus for the last furlong, legs couldn't take no more.

But am home now and in about 60 seconds I will be logging off, diving under my fleece throw and catching up with the lovely ladies of Wisteria Lane.

Have a nice weekend . . .

The Versatile Blogger

It's high time I addressed my obligations under the Versatile Blogger award. I was nominated on the 15th March 2012 by the talented Neeno at Sew Me Love I have only been blogging for five minutes, so gratefully humbled. Thank you Neeno.

Here are the rules

1. Add the badge to the winning blog page

2. Thank the blogger who gave it.

3. List the rules.

4. List seven (7) random facts about yourself.

5. Pass on the award to fifteen (15) deserving and conscientious bloggers who are nominated for their diligence, demonstrated skill, and achievements in the world of blogging and specifically in the sewing related category.
(am going to modify this requirement see below)

6. Contact the nominated bloggers and let them know they are recipients.

Rules 1,2 & 3 check.

Seven Random Facts

(i) I will be 46 years of age in August. Yikes where did the
    time go.

(ii) Am a yo yo dieter. Let's just say my will power aint all
     that.

(iii) Nervous about moving on to tops and dresses as I will
have to do an FBA, and the Bronte Sisters run large.
That being said I do have the Pletscher DVD and I know
there are many dressmakers with larger Bronte's than
      me but still . . .

(iv) Learning to knit, so you will see those projects floating
      up occasionally.

(v)  My favourite dessert is home made apple pie and
cream. You can't beat the traditional puds.

(vi) I don't drive and tend to walk everywhere, so you will
see me sporting a pair of ugly walking shoes 90% of the time.

(vii) Am unemployed so can't whip up garments every five
minutes, but stick with me as one day I may just
      surprise you.

In no particular order 15 7 deserving and conscientious bloggers.

I am unable to select 15 as am a relatively new blogger and just determining who I follow on a regular basis. There are the obvious bloggers who have quite a few followers, write books, articles etc but I suspect they will have awards galore. I am therefore going to select seven of the bloggers I have recently started following.

If there are any blogger award police out there, my sincere apologies for breaching this rule but I would be falsely selecting sewing bloggers at random just to satisfy the 15 blogger requirement.

Right, now that's out the way I will cite my seven bloggers. (just click on the name to link to their respective blogs)

Not a requirement to give a synopsis of why you have chosen your bloggers,  I just fancy doing it. And as the saying goes, a little of what you fancy . . .

Caffy -  A down to earth lass currently working on Gerties bombshell dress. Check her blog out.

Melizza - Always whipping up some bright and cheerful ensembles. Also check out her to die for pincushions.

Liz - She is so talented and I adore her fabric choices and creations. Did anyone see the fabric she used for her nautical dress or the powder blue Mad Men dress? Off the charts.

Ambitious Sewer -  Enjoy her blog and creations. Her fabric choices are funky and fabulous.

Sewtellme - She has four children, works and still whipping up ten times more than me. Although, that wouldn't be hard since I hardly do anything.

Candice - This lady still refers to herself as a beginner, but if you check out some of her creations you will be forgiven for thinking she is at the very least intermediate. She makes some wonderful flattering clothes.

Diary of a Sewing Fanatic - The blog title sums Carolyn up. Nuff said. She is so enthusiastic about sewing, and acquiring, and sharing new skills.

Rules 1, 2 & 3 check.

Jeez this blog post was hard work. Right am outta here . . .
