My First Top - Burda 05/2012 110B

I know it's been some time but y'all know am Queen Procrastinator, it's great being a Queen of something.

Right where did I leave of last time we spoke, ah yeah it was the Burda top I was making. I got a little bored with it to be honest but I plodded on as it was my first top and of course my first FBA.

I have feared doing am FBA for sooo long that I decided it was time to get my act together and delve in. It turned out to be the easiest and smoothest aspect of it.

The top was simple enough, but true to form I had some issues. I didn't use jersey but some drapey polyester which was cut on the bias. Am not sure whether sewing a bias cut garment as my first top was a good idea but I got through it.

The UglyThis pattern is so boxy, stock cube springs to mind. I nipped it in at the waist but failed to allow sufficient ease so it's not the most comfortable of tops as I can feel a slight pull in my back and one side of my body, one seam clearly has more ease than the other .

I zigzagged the seams which am not a fan of, but trying something else was proving too fiddly and I didn't have the patience, and my seam allowances didn't match, ugly seams r us

The back neck gaped, so I looked on the web and found how to address this in the pattern, so it was all good. However I sewed the hem of back neckline the wrong way, argh and I could not rip out the stitches without ripping the fabric, no idea why but my machine was on a tiny stitch length, so had to roll over the hem again which caused another gape, because the dimensions had changed.

To add insult to injury I have an unintended peplum going on which wasn't evident when I pin fitted hehe. When I had taken in the waist I should have streamlined the hips a little. I can always tuck the top in or make it work as am not doing any more alterations. No sir. When am done, am done.

Sew Again? - Initially I had plans to sew this again but nah, gone right of it. There is another one similar in another Burda mag I have, so I may sew that one, since I bought some gorgeous summery blood orange and white voile which would suit that style to a tee.

To be fair it doesn't look too bad on, but it's still goodnight Vienna for this pattern.

Until next time . . .

  1. Well done for not giving up on this project and for managing a FBA. I know how it feels when nothing is going right. What I thought was going to be a simple take in and shorten alteration on a pair of trousers turned into three evenings of silly mistakes. The final straw was when a pin scratched me while trying them on, causing blood to be shed! At least your top didn't cause bodily damage.

    1. OMG poor you. I did get pricked a few times so I immediately changed to safety pins which are great.

  2. Well done for sticking with this project till the end ! It's one of the most difficult things to do for me, trying to solve fit issues, so, i'm impressed . And, as far as I can see on the picture, the top looks good. Nice print too !

    1. Thx Ching. Just glad to have got my first top out of the way as I have been putting it off because of the FBA fear lol.

  4. unintended peplum, hehe! Your writing always brings a smile to my face :) I reckon it looks pretty amazing in your pictures so congratulations! Maybe you'll come back to the pattern sometime, now you've worked out the kinks to get a good fit. That's the hard part you know, and you did a terrific job!

    1. Thx Carolyn. The pattern has been binned. There are similar ones always showing up in the Burda mags so may try a similar one in the future.
