Sewed Something . . .

Courtesy of http://www.mimigstyle.com/

Yes you heard right. I felt a trickle of my sewing mojo coming back, so I was all over it like a rash, cutting board on the floor and there I was, bad back and all, crouched on all fours, jabbing pins into the cardboard.

I was given some brown and cream polyester by a lady in my knitting group. Initially I was going to make a bias cut skirt, then I thought better of it, not the ideal project for a beginner easing back into sewing, especially since I haven't done one before . . .  it may have sent me over the edge.

I also had one of Mimi G's free tutorials in mind, in particular the maxi skirt, I had been procrastinating about doing this for weeks but my head wasn't in it, until a few days ago.

The waistband isn't really that wonky, am cr* at styling my slim model lol.

There wasn't enough width in my fabric to follow Mimi's instructions to the letter as it is based on your waist size, the fabric was about 2" short which transpired to a total of 8 inches in total because of the two large panels to be cut on the fold. So I just cut to the width of the fabric on the fold and hoped for the best.  It worked out well for me as there was more than enough gathers.

Only differences I made were, for the casing I turned up 1/4 inch first to encase the raw edge before turning about 1 inch and also stitched in the ditch vertically in the waist area of the side seams, centre back and front to hold elastic in place.

I bound the seams with shop bought chocolate brown bias binding. Ooo look at me. I like doing that since I don't have a serger, and like my insides to look nice, although I did make a few boo, boos applying it. Nothing new there, hence why my sewing machine is called Lady Boo Boo.

Still need to master binding but am getting better, they look the biz though.

Made a few boo, boo's with the hem, part of it is a mess but you wouldn't know since it's a flary maxi lol. Love the feel of this when it is on, carefree and footloose. May make another just for the that feeling alone.

I really enjoyed this project and it got me out of my "no sewing mojo" spell. Thanks Mimi .

One thing I did learn from this project, is I need an effin cutting table.

Until Next Time  . . .

  1. Nice, you sewed!! How about using your bed as a cutting table? Put your cardboard cutting board on the bed, then you just kill your knees. 8-D Seriously tho, it would likely be easier on your back.

The bias binding looks good. You go girl.

    1. Thanks ElleC. Think I will live. Can't stand my bedroom and prefer watching/hearing the TV as I cut in the living room hehe. I have to have a certain ambience when I start sewing and tend to do it of an evening. Glad to hear your diet is going well.

  2. Gorgeous! You are so right; maxi skirts are absolute heaven to wear, flowing around the ankles. Such a gorgeous feeling :) The HongKong bound seams look fab, yay for you, going that extra step!
I don't have a cutting table either, but I use our dining room table a lot of the time. Or if you have a wide kitchen bench top, you might be able to use that?

    1. I only have a coffee table, live in a flat. My kitchen work tops are too small lol. I will grin and bear it for now.

  4. I finally got a cutting table after a week long visit from my parents. Hubby was easy to convince that we could get rid of the bedroom set in the guest bedroom and turn it into a sewing room for me. It is all about timing...
I love your skirt! Looks pretty and comfortable all at once.

  5. Indeed, look at you! The bias binding is very nice. I am also in the floor cutting club so know what you mean. How does your lower back feel?

    1. Achy lol. I have a bad back anyway so it doesn't help. I may try the bed as ElleC suggested, in the spare room and put some cushions under my knees. Normally I would use the coffee table but couldn't for this.

  7. I cut things out on the floor, too. And it takes a lot for me to get down there and do it. I put off cutting things out way more than I put off sewing. I love that fabric! I bet that's very pretty on.

    1. It's a pain, excuse the pun. I am glad I bought one of those pattern cutting boards, so next time am going to lay that out on my bed and see how that goes. So glad I bought that board, for some reason I thought they were really expensive but they weren't. I'll keep you posted lol.

  8. What a great looking skirt! I am also inspired to see that your sewing mojo has returned. I have been in a no sew funk all summer :o( Fortunately Halloween is coming and my oldest has put in a costume request, so hopefully I will be back at the machine very soon.
